It’s the most wonderful time of the year. It is, for the most part, until you look around and see your kids with their noses buried into their devices. Buried noses, even though they’ve asked for yet another device or trendy toy. Ugh. You decide that these devices must be enough for them. If they can entertain your children for hours on end, then why on earth do they need another one? So you think, what now? What should you give them for Christmas? How about giving them something that will last a lifetime: the gift of the Martial Arts. Here are a few reasons why.
- Life Skills: The Martial Arts go beyond typical sports when it comes to developing true leadership and life skills. Honesty, Courtesy, Self-Discipline, Perseverance, and a Positive Attitude are principles that will carry into all other aspects of their lives.
- Kids Need an Outlet: Martial Arts allow your child to burn off the energy they need in a safe, supervised context. Kids don’t get enough physical activity throughout the day. Healthy kids stem from healthier bodies. Martial Arts classes get them moving.
- Self-Defense: When delivered the right way, Martial Arts teach children the “art of fighting, without fighting.” Kids gather the skills they need to stand up to bullies, avoid confrontation, and resolve conflict peacefully. Plus, busy kids = safer kids!
- How about FUN! We all need some fun in our lives. High-fives, jumping jacks, music and all other aspects of a Martial Arts class will brighten anyone’s day. Kids see Martial Arts on tv, movies, and video games. Give them a chance to be a Ninja Turtle or Kung Fu Panda. For older kids, new friendships develop through the Martial Arts, and socialization takes on a new form.
So far, the focus has been on your children. But what about you? Maybe it’s time you give yourself or your spouse the gift that will last a lifetime. Self care is a key component of being a great parent and a better you. Whether it’s Karate to achieve that next belt, Jiu-Jitsu to get that move or Kickboxing to gain strength and blow off some steam, think about giving it a try.
Now, we don’t want you to think we are a bunch of Scrooges or a group of “anti-device-toy-game, “oh, so serious” Martial Artists. We understand the joy that comes with watching your children or spouse find that “perfect” gift under the tree. Toys are great and devices have their place, but they should have a balanced place within a healthy, active lifestyle. So yay! There are presents under the tree and the only thing left to do is to decide when to start a Martial Arts program. We of course, suggest to start right away. Our dojo is open a few days over the holidays to keep everyone going, to keep those devices at bay and to give the kids something to do while school is out. But you can also wait until the new year, which is a perfect time to establish new routines and life changes. Either way, deciding this Christmas to give the gift that will last a lifetime to either yourself, your spouse, or your kids will be something your future self will thank you for, we promise.
